{"id":180,"date":"2012-07-15T09:09:26","date_gmt":"2012-07-15T07:09:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/investigate-islam.com\/web\/web\/?p=180"},"modified":"2012-07-15T09:09:26","modified_gmt":"2012-07-15T07:09:26","slug":"lying-and-hypocrisy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/investigate-islam.com\/web\/?p=180","title":{"rendered":"Lying and Hypocrisy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just as truthfulness is the very cornerstone of the upright person\u2019s character and the springboard for his virtuousness, falsehood, its opposite, is the foundation of a person\u2019s depravity and the launch pad for his wickedness.\u00a0 Just as the truthfulness of a person starts from within &#8211; that is, it is a reflection of a state of true faith &#8211; a person\u2019s dishonesty, lying and deceit is also a reflection of the inner state.\u00a0 This is why God mentions truthfulness as being the opposite of hypocrisy:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat God may reward the truthful for their truthfulness, and punish the hypocrites if He wills, or turn mercifully towards them&#8230;\u201d (Quran 33:24)<\/p>\n<p>\u2026and why He mentions sincerity as a mark of truthfulness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo that God might recompense the truthful for their truthfulness\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Little wonder then that the most righteous and truthful of people, the Prophets of God<a title=\" The Companion, Anas b. Malik, reported that the Prophet even mentioned how: \u2018A Prophet does not (even) wink!\u2019 (Abu Dawud, Nisaa'ee, Hakim, Ahmad)\" name=\"_ftnref10674\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/425\/#_ftn10674\"><\/a>[1] \u00a0and their true followers, were not belied, denounced, opposed, oppressed and rejected except by those who were given to dishonesty, deceit and hypocrisy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is only those who believe not in the Signs of God, who fabricate falsehood, and it is they who are the liars.\u201d (Quran 16:105)<\/p>\n<p>That is regards to falsehood in faith.\u00a0 As for falsehood in deed, God states in the Quran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c&#8230;that He may try you, which of you is the best in deeds.\u201d (Quran 67:2)<\/p>\n<p>A scholar from the early period of Islam, Fudail bin Iyaad, commented on this verse, explaining:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c\u2018which of you Is the best in deeds\u2019 <\/strong>means \u2018the most sincere and correct.\u2019 \u00a0If the deed is sincere and not correct, it will not be accepted, and if it is correct and not sincere, it will not be accepted.\u00a0 It will not be accepted until it is both sincere and correct!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One everyday example of where sincerity and correction of action are often subverted by falsehood is in the buying and selling of goods.\u00a0 Hence we find the Prophet saying:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they (two parties meeting to trade) are truthful and clarify (any and all deficiency in their goods), their transaction will be blessed.\u00a0 But if they lie and conceal (any deficiency in their goods), the blessings of their transaction will be eradicated.\u201d<a title=\" Reported by Hakim b. Hizam, in Saheeh Al-Bukhari and Saheeh Muslim.\" name=\"_ftnref10675\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/425\/#_ftn10675\"><\/a><strong>[2]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And what of falsehood in speech? \u00a0Falsehood of the tongue, or what is more commonly referred to as lying, is a characteristic roundly rejected by the entire world \u2013 even if its inhabitants may fall into it from time to time.\u00a0 After all, if God would punish his last and greatest Prophet in case he were to lie\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he (Prophet Muhammad) had invented false sayings concerning Us, We would surely have grasped him firmly, and then cut off the artery of his heart, and none of you could have withheld Us from doing this.\u201d (Quran 69:44-7)<\/p>\n<p>\u2026then how could lying be acceptable from anyone else besides His Prophet?! \u00a0And he, the Prophet Muhammad, the Truthful One, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA slave\u2019s faith will not be upright until his heart is upright, and his heart will not be upright until his tongue is upright, and a man whose neighbor is not safe from his harm will not enter Paradise.\u201d<a title=\" Reported by the Companion, Anas b. Malik in As-Saheehah.\" name=\"_ftnref10676\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/425\/#_ftn10676\"><\/a><strong>[3]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Prophet said: <strong>\u201cA person lies and lies, until he is written with God as a habitual liar.\u201d (<em>Saheeh Al-Bukhari<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thus, the habitual liar is despised, truly and thoroughly despised, by all \u2013 even his own kind \u2013 as no-one can trust a liar, not even other liars.\u00a0 And just as clarity in speech is a sign of truthfulness, so then ambiguity, innuendo, sarcasm and every other form of deception and trickery of the tongue is denounced in Islam.\u00a0 Even lying in jest has been condemned by the Prophet when he said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guarantee a house in the middle of Paradise for the one who leaves off lying even if it be in jest.\u201d<a title=\" Reported by Abu Umamah, in At-Tirmidhi.\" name=\"_ftnref10677\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/425\/#_ftn10677\"><\/a><strong>[4]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and his saying:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWoe to the person who lies to make people laugh! \u00a0Woe to him, woe to him!\u201d<a title=\" Reported by Mu\u2018awiyah b. Jaydah al-Qushayri in Abu Dawud.\" name=\"_ftnref10678\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/425\/#_ftn10678\"><\/a><strong>[5]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Prophet\u2019s closest friend and immediate temporal successor, Abu Bakr <em>as-\u015eiddeeq<\/em> (i.e. the truthful &#8211; so named by the Prophet due to the truthfulness of his faith), further said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeware of lying, for lying opposes (true) faith.\u201d<a title=\" Bayhaqi, Shu\u2018ab al-Iman.\" name=\"_ftnref10679\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/425\/#_ftn10679\"><\/a><strong>[6]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And the daughter of Abu Bakr, Aisha, who was the beloved wife of the Prophet, mentioned that:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no trait more abhorrent to the Messenger of God, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, than lying.\u201d<a title=\" Ahmad.\" name=\"_ftnref10680\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/425\/#_ftn10680\"><\/a><strong>[7]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Suffice as a deterrence from lying is its being listed as a trait of that most wretched of conditions: hypocrisy.\u00a0 The Prophet Muhammad said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe signs of the hypocrite are three: when he speaks he lies; when he makes an oath he breaks it; and when he is entrusted with something he betrays that trust.\u201d<a title=\" Reported by the Companion, Abu Hurayrah, in Saheeh Al-Bukhari and Saheeh Muslim.\" name=\"_ftnref10681\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/425\/#_ftn10681\"><\/a><strong>[8]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not only do we learn about the abhorrence of directly lying itself, but Islam also mercifully educates us as to the dangers of all that which <em>indirectly<\/em> leads to lying.<\/p>\n<p>Again from Aishah we learn that the Prophet would invoke his Lord, praying: <strong>\u201cO God! \u00a0I seek refuge with you from all sins, and from being in debt.\u201d<\/strong> \u00a0When asked: <strong>\u201cO Messenger of God! \u00a0You frequently seek refuge with God from being in debt!\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 The Prophet of God replied: <strong>\u201cIf a person is in debt, he tells lies when he speaks, and breaks his promises when he promises.\u201d<\/strong><a title=\" Saheeh Al-Bukhari.\" name=\"_ftnref10682\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/425\/#_ftn10682\"><\/a>[9]<\/p>\n<p>In the same vain, the Prophet explicitly ordered his followers:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave that which causes you doubt for that which does not cause you doubt.\u00a0 For in truthfulness lies tranquility, and in lying lies doubt.\u201d<a title=\" Reported by Al-Hasan b. Ali, in At-Tirmidhi.\" name=\"_ftnref10683\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/425\/#_ftn10683\"><\/a><strong>[10]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Striving for truthfulness then, in spirit, word and deed, is a matter which requires the utmost steadfastness from the believer, as well as the utmost vigilance against the dangers of falsehood, insincerity, deceit and hypocrisy:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat God will reward the People of Truth for their truth, and punish the hypocrites if that be His Will, or turn to them in Mercy; for God is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.\u201d (Quran 33:24)<\/p>\n<div><br clear=\"all\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Footnotes:<\/p>\n<div id=\"ftn1\">\n<p><a title=\"Back to the refrence of this footnote\" name=\"_ftn10674\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/425\/#_ftnref10674\"><\/a>[1] The Companion, Anas b.
