{"id":182,"date":"2012-07-15T09:11:12","date_gmt":"2012-07-15T07:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/investigate-islam.com\/web\/web\/?p=182"},"modified":"2012-07-15T09:11:12","modified_gmt":"2012-07-15T07:11:12","slug":"visiting-the-sick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/investigate-islam.com\/web\/?p=182","title":{"rendered":"Visiting the Sick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Islam invites to all that is good and warns from all that is bad.\u00a0 From those good and virtuous deeds is the visiting of the ill and afflicted.\u00a0 When people visit each other in good health, bonds of brotherhood and friendship are strengthened.\u00a0 How then when people visit each other in times of sickness and poor or failing health? \u00a0Illustrating the empathy that Muslims are required to feel for each other, Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe parable of the Believers in their mutual love and mercy is like that of a living body: if one part feels pain, the whole body suffers in sleeplessness and fever.\u201d<a title=\" Saheeh Muslim.\" name=\"_ftnref10696\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/427\/#_ftn10696\"><\/a><strong>[1]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Visiting the sick is from the clearest signs of such mutual love, mercy and empathy.\u00a0 More than that, visiting the sick is a major responsibility that every single Muslim is duty-bound to fulfill.\u00a0 The Prophet Muhammad said:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rights of one Muslim over another Muslim are six\u2026 When you meet him, you greet him with the <em>salaam<\/em> (i.e. to say: \u201c<em>As-Salamu alaykum<\/em>\u201d), when he invites you, you accept his invitation, when he consults you in a matter, you give him sincere advice, when he sneezes and praises God, you ask God to have mercy on him, when he is sick, you visit him, and when he passes away you accompany him (through his funeral).\u201d<a title=\" Related by Abu Hurayra in Saheeh Bukhari.\" name=\"_ftnref10697\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/427\/#_ftn10697\"><\/a><strong>[2]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this Prophetic narration) we find that the Muslim is encouraged with concern for his brother in Islam during the three phases of his worldly existence: his health, sickness and his death.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst in good health, the Muslim is obliged to greet his brother in faith with the greetings of peace and protection, to accept his invitations and to give him sincere advice.<\/p>\n<p>Then, when the Muslim is suffering from a cold, an allergy or whatever else is causing him to sneeze, his brother in Islam is obliged to ask God to have mercy on him. \u00a0Likewise, when the Muslim\u2019s sickness is such that he is incapacitated, his brother in Islam is obliged to visit him.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, when the Muslim passes away from this life, his brother in faith is obliged to accompany his funeral procession, prayer and burial.<\/p>\n<p>The great reward awaiting those who visit the sick was spelt out by the Prophet when he explained:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cA Muslim visiting his sick brother will continue to be in the harvest of paradise until he or she returns home.\u201d<\/strong><a title=\" Saheeh Muslim.\" name=\"_ftnref10698\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/427\/#_ftn10698\"><\/a>[3]<\/p>\n<p>And God\u2019s Messenger of Mercy, Muhammad, also said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA visitor walking to visit a sick person will be wading in the mercy of God.\u00a0 When the visitor sits with the sick one, they will be immersed in mercy until his or her return.\u201d<a title=\" Imam Ahmad and Ibn Hibban.\" name=\"_ftnref10699\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/427\/#_ftn10699\"><\/a><strong>[4]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>God Himself explained the importance of and greatness of the reward of visiting the sick. The Prophet said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the Day of Resurrection, God the Mighty and Majestic will say: \u2018O child of Adam! I became sick and you did not visit me!\u2019 The person will say, \u2018O Lord, how can I visit you and you are the Lord of all that Exists!\u2019 God will say, \u2018Did you not know that my slave \u2018so and so\u2019 became sick, and you did not visit him? Did you not know that if you visited him, you would have found me with him?\u2019\u201d (<em>Saheeh Muslim<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>As with every other virtuous deed and noble duty, Prophet Muhammad led by example.\u00a0 He would both make time to personally visit the sick and also enquire after them through others.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst in Mecca, for example, a pagan woman was given to throw filth and garbage upon the Prophet whenever he passed her house. \u00a0One day, the noticeable absence of the Prophet\u2019s abuser concerned him so much that he enquired after her.\u00a0 When he learnt of her sickness, he visited her.\u00a0 She was so taken aback by his merciful concern and that she embraced Islam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepel (the evil of your foe) with what is better: then lo! \u00a0the one between whom and you was enmity (will become to you) as if he were a dear friend.\u201d (Quran 41:34)<\/p>\n<p>The learned Companion, Anas b.
