We come across instances of suicide bombers and others killing<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y10 ff2 fs1 fc2 sc0 ls0 ws1\">innocent people almost on daily basis. In the light of Seerah of the True<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y11 ff2 fs1 fc2 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Messenger of Allah, can it be justified? What does Prophet Muhammad&#8217;s life<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y12 ff2 fs1 fc2 sc0 ls0 ws1\">teach us? What is the ideal versus reality?<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y13 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">This article intends to briefly look at the ideas of peace and justice in Islam and<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y14 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">explore their deeper significance in the life of a Muslim. It will discuss and<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y15 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">highlight the different aspects of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) life and deeds in<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y16 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">respect to the peace and social order in present scenario. The messages of the<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y17 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Prophet whichwould be viewedand analyzed inthis study havemultipurpose<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y18 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">implications both for the Muslim world and the Western world. World peace<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y19 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">needs a proper code of conduct and role model. The teachings of the Prophet<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y1a ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">provide the desired code of conduct <span class=\"fc2\">(i.e. the law) and the life of the Prophet is the <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y1b ff2 fs1 fc2 sc0 ls0 ws1\">reference point, the role model. <span class=\"fc0\">The textual messages in this research are the <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y1c ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">speeches and treaties that the prophet had with his counterparts, companions and<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y1d ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">followers. In addition, his orations or sermons that he delivered to address the<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y1e ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">mankind in general. His skillful use of rhetoric demonstrated his commitment for<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y1f ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">meaningful competent communication for humankind in general. His speeches<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y20 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">demonstrated that he sought to see all humankind from the lens of kindness,<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y21 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">modesty, moderation, justice, liberty, gentility, generosity and love. The paper<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y22 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">focuses on the argumentthat the basic teachings of the Quran and the Prophet<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y23 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">(SAW) are not inconsistent with modern charters of United Nations. Political factions and all sorts of social and<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y28 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">economic discrimination have segmented the human race. Injustice is very<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y29 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">widespread on this earth. There can be no peace without the firm establishment of<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y2a ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">justice. The more you see injustice, the more you realize the importance of<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y2b ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">establishing justice in the land. When mankind lacks guidance on how to live their<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y2c ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">lives, the entire structure of societyis damaged. Allah (swt) has sent down the<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y2d ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Quran as guidance for all of mankind, with all the rules and regulations we need<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y2e ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">to stay on the right track. Islam is a very complete way of life. Every rule that is<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y2f ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">good for humanity has been ordained in the Shariah of Allah (swt). Everything we<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y30 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">need, in order to live successfully, can be found in the Quran. Amongst these very<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y31 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">important divinely instructed laws is the law of establishing justice.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y32 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Islam the very name of which means \u201cpeace\u201d submission to the will of Allah and<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y33 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">ladder on which man can always keep rising morally and spiritually is at all<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y34 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">related to tolerance.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y35 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">The Quran attaches great valueto peace. Peace at the expense of justice is not<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y36 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">acceptable to the Quran. These two issues peace and justice are not only<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y37 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">correlated but complementary to each other.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y38 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Allah says in the Quran:<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y39 ff4 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">\u201cAllah commands justice, the doing of good, and liberality to kith and kin, and<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y3a ff4 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">He forbids all shameful deeds, and injusticeand rebellion: He instructs you,<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y3b ff4 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">that you may receive admonition.\u201d (Al Quran; 15:90)<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y3c ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Establishing justice is the law of Allah (swt). It is part of the balance which Allah<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y3d ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">has created as justice lead to the peace in the society. The essence of justice is the<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x2 h2 yb ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0\">3<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pdf-page-separator\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"pdf-viewer-page js-lazy-load-page display-page\" data-lazy-batch=\"2\">\n<div class=\"pdf-lazy-load\">\n<div id=\"pf4\" class=\"pf w0 h0\" data-page-no=\"4\">\n<div class=\"pc pc4 w0 h0\">\n<div class=\"pdf-bg bi x1 y3e w2 h5 lazyload\" data-bg=\"profile\/Farhat-Naz-Rahman\/publication\/242025765\/viewer\/AS:99641991368707@1400767910518\/background\/4.png\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y3f ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">recognition that all humans are equal and it means creating harmony. Once we<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y40 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">accept the principle of human equality, then we need to reject all racism,<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y41 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">nationalism, and ethnocentrism. This is something some people find difficult to<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y42 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">accept; but that is the one remedy leading us towards justice and peace.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y43 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">The findings on the Prophet&#8217;s values of moderation revealed that he placed a lot of<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y44 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">weight on justice. Let\u2019s begin from the world\u2019s first charter, treaty or constitution<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y45 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">or the document of peace called Mesaq-e-Medina when first Islamic State was<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y46 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">established in Medina by the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) after Hijrat (migration<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y47 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">from Mecca).<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y48 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">The Medina Charter, written and promulgated by Prophet Muhammad for the<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y49 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">multi-religious ten thousand-strong citizens of the city-state of Medina in 622 A.D<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y4a ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">is truly a remarkable political-constitutional document. The claim made by<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h6 y4b ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Professor M. Hamidullah that it was the first written constitution <span class=\"fs3 ws3 v1\">1<\/span> in the world is<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h6 y4c ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">not without basis. Aristotle&#8217;s Constitution of Athens,<span class=\"fs3 ws3 v1\">2<\/span> written on papyrus,<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y4d ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">discovered by an American missionary in Egypt in 1890 and published in 1891,<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y4e ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">was not a constitution. It was an account of the constitution of the city-state of<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y4f ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Athens. Other legal writings on the conduct of ancient societies have been found,<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y50 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">but none can be described as a constitution. The Medina Charter is the first, and in<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y51 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">this it preceded the American Constitution of 1787, considered by Western<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y52 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">authorities as &#8220;a landmark document of the Western world \u2026 the oldest written<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h6 y53 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">national constitution in operation&#8221; <span class=\"fs3 ws3 v1\">3<\/span> by more than a thousand years! It also<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y54 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">preceded the English feudal bill of rights, the Magna Carter of 1215, by almost six<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y55 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">centuries.<\/div>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<pre class=\"t m0 x1 h7 y56 ff2 fs4 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1 <span class=\"v2\">The First Written Constitution in the World by Dr Muhammad Hamidullah published by Sh. It <span class=\"fs6\">was a <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h8 y5d ff2 fs6 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">magnificent historical document, authored and dictated by Prophet Muhammad. This<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h8 y5e ff2 fs6 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">document securedand promoted cooperationand alliance amongall peopleof any<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h8 y5f ff2 fs6 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">creed, color, ethnicity, and lineage. And it set down the criterion of righteousness as<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h8 y60 ff2 fs6 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">thebasis ofdistinction.Ialso guaranteedthefreedom ofworshipto allreligious<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h8 y61 ff2 fs6 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">communities. And the spirit evidenced there shone into the hearts of all the followers<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y62 ff2 fs6 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">of the Prophet. That is the spirit of equity, tolerance and understanding. <span class=\"fs1\">The Prophet <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y63 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">insisted that the lack of tolerance towards the non-Muslims, under Islamic rule,<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y64 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">is a grave offense.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y65 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was able to establish a model society<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y66 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">based in Madinah, on the firm foundation of universally-recognized moral<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y67 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">principles. Among these principles, equality and justice were given supreme<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y68 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">importance; and this is evident in the life and practice of the Prophet.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y69 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">This agreement between the first Muslim community and the Jewish<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y6a ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">community in Medina shows the sense of justice portrayed in the Prophet\u2019s<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y6b ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">character in dealing with minorities. It<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y78 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">would be worthwhile to look at how he dealt with non-Muslims minorities and<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y79 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">withthe enemiesduring thewar timebecause thetrue worthof asociety<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y7a ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">manifests when it is put under pressure.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y7b ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">The Prophet and his followers were migrated to Medina due to the maltreatment<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y7c ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">of Quresh of Mecca where the Muslims were minority. When the torture became<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y7d ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">unbearablehemigratetoMedina,acityinnorthernArabia,mostofwhose<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y7e ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">inhabitants had already accepted Islam. Once he settled in Medina, the Prophet<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y7f ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">realized that there was a minority Jewish community in that city that had no<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y80 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">inclination to accept Islam. He met them and invited them to a pact with the<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y81 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Muslims so that each religious group in Medina knew its rights and obligations as<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y82 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">well as limitations. The Jews of the various tribes\u2026and all other<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x2 h2 yb ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0\">6<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pdf-page-separator\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"pdf-viewer-page js-lazy-load-page display-page\" data-lazy-batch=\"3\">\n<div class=\"pdf-lazy-load\">\n<div id=\"pf7\" class=\"pf w0 h0\" data-page-no=\"7\">\n<div class=\"pc pc7 w0 h0\">\n<div class=\"t m0 x5 h2 y3f ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">non-Muslim residents of Medina shall form with the Muslims one<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x5 h2 y40 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">composite nation<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y41 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y42 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls2\">&#8211;<span class=\"fs3 ls3 ws1\"> <span class=\"fs1 ls0\">They shall practice their religion as freely as the Muslims.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y87 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y88 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls2\">&#8211;<span class=\"fs3 ls0 ws1\"> <span class=\"fs1\">The allies of the Jews shall enjoy the same security and freedom. The <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x5 h2 y89 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">guilty shall be pursued and punished. The Jews shall join the Muslims in<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x5 h2 y8a ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">defending Medina against all enemies. The interior of Medina shall be a<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x5 h2 y8b ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">sacred place for all who accept this Charter. The allies of the Muslims and<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x5 h2 y8c ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">of the Jews shall be as respected as the principal parties of this Charter.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y8d ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Mesaq-e-Medina was no doubt the important document in the Muslim history as<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y8e ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">itestablishedrulesof conductinsocietyandprovidedthe Muslimsasecure<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y8f ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">atmosphere in Medina but on the other hand one cannot ignore the significance of<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y90 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">the Treaty of Hudaybia which placed a remarkable document of peace in the<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y91 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">history as it enabled the Muslims of Medina to be relieved from pressure and fear<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y92 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">for at least ten years from their traditional enemies in Makkah.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y93 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y94 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Following theexample of ProphetMuhammad (s.a.w.) manyrulers in Muslim<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y95 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">history maintained peaceful and cordial relations with their non-Muslim citizens.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y96 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">If we were to compare the attitude of the Muslim rulers towards the minorities<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y97 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">living under their rule during the nineteenth century\u2014with the attitude of the<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y98 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Europeans and the Americans towards their minorities, I dare to say that the<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y99 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">record of the Muslims would be much better. Professor Roderic Davison, a<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y9a ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">prominent historian of the Ottoman Empire, writes, \u201cIt might in fact have been<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y9b ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">argued that the Turks were less oppressive of their subject people than were<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y9c ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Prussians of the Poles, the English of the Irish, or the Americans of the Negroes\u2026<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h6 y9d ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">There is evidence to show that in this period [i.e., late 19<span class=\"fs3 ws3 v1\">th<\/span> century], there was<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x2 h2 yb ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0\">7<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pdf-page-separator\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"pdf-viewer-page js-lazy-load-page display-page\" data-lazy-batch=\"4\">\n<div class=\"pdf-lazy-load\">\n<div id=\"pf8\" class=\"pf w0 h0\" data-page-no=\"8\">\n<div class=\"pc pc8 w0 h0\">\n<div class=\"pdf-bg bi x1 y9e w2 h5 lazyload\" data-bg=\"profile\/Farhat-Naz-Rahman\/publication\/242025765\/viewer\/AS:99641991368707@1400767910518\/background\/8.png\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y3f ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">emigration from independent Greece into the Ottoman Empire, since some Greeks<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y40 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">found the Ottoman government a more indulgent master [than their own Greek<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h6 y41 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws0\">government].\u201d<span class=\"fs3 ws3 v1\">5<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y42 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y87 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">If one study the medieval history of Europe, one will see that the only model<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y88 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">of a peaceful multi-cultural and multi-faith society was Spain under the Muslim<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y89 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">rule\u2014a Spain in which Christians, Jews and Muslims lived in peace and harmony.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h9 y9f ff5 fs2 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Prophet Muhammad\u2019s Last Sermon<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 ya0 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">The sermon was delivered on the Ninth Day of Dhul-Hijjah, 10 A.H. (<span class=\"ff1\">632 CE<\/span>) in<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 ya1 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">the \u2018Uranah valley of Mount Arafat in Makkah. It was the occasion of the annual<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 ya2 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">rites of Hajj (the pilgrimage). It is also known as the Farewell Pilgrimage.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 ya3 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">The charter of the UN on Human Rights was written in the 40\u2019s, but the human<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 ya4 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">rights in Islam were recognized, declared and executed for over 1400 years. Every<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 ya5 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">place one reads in the farewell sermon of the Prophet Muhammad, will find<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 ya6 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">clearly the declaration of human rights. This declaration is summarized as<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 ya7 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws0\">follows:<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 ya8 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">1. Freedom to all<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 ya9 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">2. Sanctity of life, wealth and property<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 yaa ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">3. Justice in front of the law and in front of ALLAH<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y42 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">5. Women\u2019s rights and obligations. They were to be treated as partners but not as<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y87 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws0\">subjects.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y89 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">6. No exploitation or monopoly. The rich is not to be richer while the poor is to be<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y8a ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws0\">poorer.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y8c ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">7. Rights of others are to be preserved and to be delivered.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y8d ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">8. People are to take this declaration seriously, they are to preach it and to practice<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y8e ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">it too, everywhere they go or move.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y90 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">9\u00b7 Sanctity of Life and Property<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y92 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">The sanctity of life and property was pronounced clearly by the Prophet (saw) in<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y93 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">his farewell speech. People are to be protected, their lives are to be preserved and<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y94 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">their properties are to be saved.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y96 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">10\u00b7 Abolition of Usury<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y98 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">The concept of economic exploitation is totally prohibited in Islam. Usury is a<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y99 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">form of economic exploitation; therefore, Islam prohibited this type of business.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y9a ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Because of such economic monopoly and exploitation in a capitalistic system, the<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y9b ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">rich will become richer and the poor will become poorer.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y9d ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">11\u00b7 Rights and Duties of Man and Women<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x2 h2 yb ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0\">9<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pdf-page-separator\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"pdf-viewer-page js-lazy-load-page display-page\" data-lazy-batch=\"5\">\n<div class=\"pdf-lazy-load\">\n<div id=\"pfa\" class=\"pf w0 h0\" data-page-no=\"a\">\n<div class=\"pc pca w0 h0\">\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y40 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">In his farewell speech, the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) spelled out the best<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y41 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">declaration for women\u2019s rights. He demanded that the husbands should treat the<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y42 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">wives with kindness and gentleness. Men are to know that their women are their<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y87 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">partners.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y88 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">In short, throughout the emphasis is on building cordial social relations; between<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y89 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">man and wife, between individual members of the community and between all<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y8a ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">sections andclasses of thesociety.These directives aimat forging a mutually<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y8b ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">cordial and trustworthy community life, ensuring peaceful co-existence among all<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y8c ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">the constituents ofthe society. Social justice isdistinctly the unmistakable and<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 yac ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">overarching tenor of the Sermon.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 yad ff1 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">Charter of Privileges with the monks of Mount Sinai.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y78 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">In 628 C.E. Prophet Muhammad (s) granted a Charter of Privileges to the<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y79 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">monks of St. Catherine Monastery in Mt. Sinai. Let not hatred of a people incites you to act unjustly; be just\u2014<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y8e ff4 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">this is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah surely Allah is aware of what<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y8f ff4 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">you do.\u201d<span class=\"ff1\"> (Surah al-Maida, 5:8) <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h6 y90 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">The first battle in the Muslim history is of significant value. It took place in the 2<span class=\"fs3 v1\">nd <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y91 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">year Hijra between the Muslims of Medina and the polytheists of Mecca. Even<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y92 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">though outnumbered and ill-equipped, the Muslims defeated the Meccans and<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y93 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">took seventy prisoners of war.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y94 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">The norm among all societies at that time was to either kill the <span class=\"fs5 ws5\">POW<\/span>s or make<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y95 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">them slaves. But Prophet Muhammad instructed the Muslims to treat the <span class=\"fs5 ws5\">POW<\/span>s<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y96 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">humanely; they were brought back safely to Medina and given decent lodging in<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y97 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">the houses of the people who had taken them prisoners. The Qur\u2019\u00e3n decreed that<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y98 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">the <span class=\"fs5 ws5\">POW<\/span>s must not be maltreated in any way.<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y99 ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">The way the Prophet dealt with the prisoners was very revolutionary. The poor<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y9a ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">prisoners werereleased free; those whocame from wealthyfamilies of Mecca<\/div>\n<div class=\"t m0 x1 h2 y9b ff2 fs1 fc0 sc0 ls0 ws1\">were returned for a specified ransom (Fidya).
