{"id":441,"date":"2012-07-16T12:47:22","date_gmt":"2012-07-16T10:47:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/investigate-islam.com\/web\/web\/?p=441"},"modified":"2012-07-16T12:47:22","modified_gmt":"2012-07-16T10:47:22","slug":"the-consequences-of-committing-sins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/investigate-islam.com\/web\/?p=441","title":{"rendered":"The consequences of committing sins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><span style=\"color: #003366; font-family: georgia,arial,tahoma; font-size: large;\">\u00a0 <strong> <\/strong><br \/>\n<em> by\u00a0<strong> Ibn Al-Qayyim Al-Jowziyyah <\/strong><\/em> \u00a0<\/span><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\"> The great scholar Ibn Al-Qayyim Al-Jowziyyah wrote the following words<br \/>\nin a famous tract called Al-Jawaab Al-Kaafi in response to a letter<br \/>\nwritten to him by an individual who was seeking advice on how to rid<br \/>\nhimself of major sin. We take a look at the dire consequences of<br \/>\ncommitting sins in general. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">One: The Prevention of Knowledge<br \/>\nKnowledge is a light which Allah throws into the heart, and disobedience<br \/>\nextinguishes this light. Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee said: I complained to Wakee\u2019<br \/>\nabout the weakness of my memory so he ordered me to abandon disobedience<br \/>\nand informed me that knowledge is light and that the light of Allah is not<br \/>\ngiven to the disobedient. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Two: The Prevention of Sustenance<br \/>\nJust as Taqwaa brings about sustenance, the abandonment of Taqwaa causes<br \/>\npoverty. There is nothing which can bring about sustenance like the<br \/>\nabandonment of disobedience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Three: The Prevention of Obedience (to Allah)<br \/>\nIf there was no other punishment for sin other than that it prevents one<br \/>\nfrom obedience to Allah then this would be sufficient. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Four: Disobedience weakens the heart and the body.<br \/>\nIts weakening the heart is something which is clear. Disobedience does not<br \/>\nstop weakening it until the life of the heart ceases completely. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Five: Disobedience reduces the life span and destroys any blessings.<br \/>\nJust as righteousness increases the life span, sinning reduces it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Six: Disobedience sows its own seeds and gives birth to itself until<br \/>\nseparating from it and coming out of it becomes difficult for the servant. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Seven: Sins weaken the hearts will and resolve so that the desire for<br \/>\ndisobedience becomes strong and the desire to repent becomes weak bit by<br \/>\nbit until the desire to repent is removed from the heart completely. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Eight: Every type of disobedience is a legacy of a nation from among the<br \/>\nnations which Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, destroyed. Sodomy is a<br \/>\nlegacy of the People of Lot. Taking more than one\u2019s due right and giving<br \/>\nwhat is less is a legacy of the People of Shu\u2019ayb. Seeking greatness in<br \/>\nthe land and causing corruption is a legacy of the People of Pharoah.<br \/>\nPride\/arrogance and tyranny is a legacy of the People of Hud. So the<br \/>\ndisobedient one is wearing the gown of some of these nations who were the<br \/>\nenemies of Allah. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Nine: Disobedience is a cause of the servant being held in contempt by his<br \/>\nLord. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Al-Hasan Al-Basree (radiallahu \u2018anhu) said: They became contemptible in<br \/>\n(His sight) so they disobeyed Him. If they were honorable (in His sight)<br \/>\nHe would have protected them. Allah the Exalted said: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">And whomsoever Allah lowers (humiliates) there is none to give honor.<br \/>\n[Al-Hajj 22:18) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Ten: The ill-effects of the sinner fall upon those besides him and also<br \/>\nthe animals as a result of which they are touched by harm. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Eleven: The servant continues to commit sins until they become very easy<br \/>\nfor him and seem insignificant in his heart and this is a sign of<br \/>\ndestruction. Every time a sin becomes insignificant in the sight of the<br \/>\nservant it becomes great in the sight of Allah. Ibn Mas\u2019ood (radiallahu<br \/>\n\u2018anhu) said: Indeed, the believer sees his sins as if he was standing at<br \/>\nthe foot of a mountain fearing that it will fall upon him and the sinner<br \/>\nsees his sins like a fly which passes by his nose so he tries to remove it<br \/>\nby waving his hand around. [Al-Bukhaaree] <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Twelve: Disobedience inherits humiliation and lowliness.<br \/>\nHonor, all of it, lies in the obedience of Allaah. Abdullaah ibn<br \/>\nal-Mubaarak said: I have seen sins kill the hearts and humiliation is<br \/>\ninherited by their continuity. The abandonment of sins gives life to the<br \/>\nhearts and the prevention of your soul is better for it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Thirteen: Disobedience corrupts the intellect.<br \/>\nThe intellect has light and disobedience extinguishes this light. When the<br \/>\nlight of the intellect is extinguished it becomes weak and deficient. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Fourteen: When disobedience increases, the servant\u2019s heart becomes sealed<br \/>\nso that he becomes of those who are heedless. The Exalted said: But no! A<br \/>\nstain has been left on their hearts on account of what they used to earn<br \/>\n(i.e. their actions) [Al-Mutaffifeen 83:141] <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Fifteen: Sins cause the various types of corruption to occur in the land.<br \/>\nCorruption of the waters, the air, the plants, the fruits and the dwelling<br \/>\nplaces. The Exalted said: Mischief has appeared on the land and the sea on<br \/>\naccount of what the hands of men have earned; that He may give them a<br \/>\ntaste of some of (the actions) they have done, in order that they may<br \/>\nreturn. [Ar-Rum 30:41] <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Sixteen: The disappearance of modesty, which is the essence of the life of<br \/>\nthe heart and is the basis of every good. Its disappearance is the<br \/>\ndisappearance of all that is good. It is authentic from the Messenger<br \/>\n(sallallahu \u2018alaihi wa sallam) that he said: Modesty is goodness, all of<br \/>\nit. [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim] <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">A Poet said: And by Allah, there is no good in life or in the world when<br \/>\nmodesty goes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Seventeen: Sins weaken and reduce the magnification of Allaah, the Mighty<br \/>\nin the heart of the servant. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Eighteen: Sins are the cause of Allah forgetting His servant, abandoning<br \/>\nhim and leaving him to fend for himself with his soul and his shaytaan and<br \/>\nin this is the destruction from which no deliverance can be hoped for. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Nineteen: Sins remove the servant from the realm of Ihsaan (doing good)<br \/>\nand he is prevented from (obtaining) the reward of those who do good. When<br \/>\nIhsaan fills the heart it prevents it from disobedience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Twenty: Disobedience causes the favors of Allah to cease and justify His<br \/>\nretribution. No blessing ceases to reach a servant except due to a sin and<br \/>\nno retribution is made desrving upon him except due to a sin. Ali<br \/>\n(radiallahu \u2018anhu) said: No trial has descended except due to a sin and it<br \/>\n(the trial) is not repelled except by repentance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">Allaah the Exalted said:<br \/>\nWhatever misfortune afflicts you then it is due to what your hands have<br \/>\nearned and (yet) He pardons many. [Ash-Shura 42:30] <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">And the Exalted also said:<br \/>\nThat is because never will Allah change the favor He has bestowed on a<br \/>\npeople until they change what is within themselves. [Anfaal 8:53] <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633; font-family: verdana,arial,tahoma; font-size: small;\">May Allah have mercy upon us and help us to abandon the sins that are the<br \/>\ncauses of our problems.
