{"id":786,"date":"2012-07-19T11:10:22","date_gmt":"2012-07-19T09:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/investigate-islam.com\/web\/web\/?p=786"},"modified":"2012-07-19T11:10:22","modified_gmt":"2012-07-19T09:10:22","slug":"the-quran-on-seas-and-rivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/investigate-islam.com\/web\/?p=786","title":{"rendered":"The Quran on Seas and Rivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Modern Science has discovered that in the places where two different seas meet, there is a barrier between them.\u00a0 This barrier divides the two seas so that each sea has its own temperature, salinity, and density.<a title=\" Principles of Oceanography, Davis, pp. 92-93.\" name=\"_ftnref10345\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/214\/#_ftn10345\"><\/a>[1]\u00a0 For example, Mediterranean sea water is warm, saline, and less dense, compared to Atlantic ocean water.\u00a0 When Mediterranean sea water enters the Atlantic over the Gibraltar sill, it moves several hundred kilometers into the Atlantic at a depth of about 1000 meters with its own warm, saline, and less dense characteristics.\u00a0 The Mediterranean water stabilizes at this depth<a title=\" Principles of Oceanography, Davis, p. 93.\" name=\"_ftnref10346\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/214\/#_ftn10346\"><\/a>[2](see figure 1).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">\n<p dir=\"LTR\" align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/images\/The_Quran_on_Seas_and_Rivers_002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"157\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">Figure 1: The Mediterranean sea water as it enters the Atlantic over the Gibraltar sill with its own warm, saline, and less dense characteristics, because of the barrier that distinguishes between them.\u00a0 Temperatures are in degrees Celsius (C\u00b0). (Marine Geology, Kuenen, p. 43, with a slight enhancement.)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">Although there are large waves, strong currents, and tides in these seas, they do not mix or transgress this barrier.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">The Holy Quran mentioned that there is a barrier between two seas that meet and that they do not transgress.\u00a0 God has said:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">\u201cHe has set free the two seas meeting together.\u00a0 There is a barrier between them.\u00a0 They do not transgress.\u201d (Quran 55:19-20)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">But when the Quran speaks about the divider between fresh and salt water, it mentions the existence of \u201ca forbidding partition\u201d with the barrier.\u00a0 God has said in the Quran:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">\u201cHe is the one who has set free the two kinds of water, one sweet and palatable, and the other salty and bitter.\u00a0 And He has made between them a barrier and a forbidding partition.\u201d (Quran 25:53)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">One may ask, why did the Quran mention the partition when speaking about the divider between fresh and salt water, but did not mention it when speaking about the divider between the two seas?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">Modern science has discovered that in estuaries, where fresh (sweet) and salt water meet, the situation is somewhat different from what is found in places where two seas meet.\u00a0 It has been discovered that what distinguishes fresh water from salt water in estuaries is a \u201cpycnocline zone with a marked density discontinuity separating the two layers.\u201d<a title=\" Oceanography, Gross, p. 242.\u00a0 Also see Introductory Oceanography, Thurman, pp. 300-301.\" name=\"_ftnref10347\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/214\/#_ftn10347\"><\/a>[3]\u00a0 This partition (zone of separation) has a different salinity from the fresh water and from the salt water<a title=\" Oceanography, Gross, p. 244, and Introductory Oceanography, Thurman, pp. 300-301.\" name=\"_ftnref10348\" href=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/214\/#_ftn10348\"><\/a>[4] (see figure 2).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">\n<p dir=\"LTR\" align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.islamreligion.com\/articles\/images\/The_Quran_on_Seas_and_Rivers_003.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"118\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\">Figure 2: Longitudinal section showing salinity (parts per thousand \u2030) in an estuary.\u00a0 We can see here the partition (zone of separation) between the fresh and the salt water.
