Major Sins in Islam

Major Sins in Islam are defined as what is forbidden by Allah and His Messenger in the Qur’an and the Sunnah in addition to what is narrated on the authority of early Muslims. Allah, the Most high, promises whoever avoids the major sins to expiate his minor sins.

Allah, the Almighty says,

If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sins and admit you to a noble entrance [into Paradise]. – Quran 4:31

In this text, Allah, the Most High, also promises whoever avoids the major sins to admit him to Paradise.

Allah, the Almighty says,

And those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, and when they are angry, they forgive. – Quran 42:37

The Qur’an also states,

Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. – Quran 53:32

The Prophet (pbuh) said,

“The five prescribed Prayers, and from one Friday Prayer to another and from Ramadan to another entail forgiveness for what is between them as long as you do not commit the major sins.” – Reported by Muslim, Tirmidhi, Ibn Khuzaymah and Ahmed.

We are obliged to learn about what the major sins are, so that Muslims may avoid them. Scholars of Sacred knowledge are of different opinions about the number of the major sins.

It is argued that they are only seven owing to the Prophet’s (pbuh) saying,

“Avoid the seven heinous sins: Worshiping others with Allah, sorcery, taking a life which Allah has made sacred except in the course of justice, devouring usury, appropriating the property of the orphan, fleeing from the battlefield, and charging believing women, unmindful though innocent, with adultery.” – Reported by Bukhari and Muslim.

 

Ibn Abbas holds that they are likely counted as seventy not seven. That is a good point of view because enumeration is not intended in the Hadith.

As a matter of fact, any sin entailing either a threat of punishment in the Hereafter explicitly mentioned by the Qur’an or Hadith, a prescribed legal penalty (Hadd), or being accursed by Allah or His Messenger (pbuh) is called a major sin. We have to bear in mind that some Major Sins in Islam are most heinous than another. This is because the Prophet (pbuh) has enlisted Shirk (worshiping others with Allah) though a polytheist will suffer eternal torture in Fire and will never be forgiven.

Allah, the Almighty, says,

Verily! Allah forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners in worship with Him, but He forgives whom he pleases sins other than that. – Quran 4:116

List of 70 Major Sins in Islam

These Major Sins in Islam are sorted in order of severity by notable scholar Imam Al-Dhahabi in his famous book Al-Kaba’ir.

1. Ascribing Associates To Allah, The Most High (Shirk)
   

   Verily! Allah forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners in worship with Him, but He forgives whom he pleases sins other than that. – Quran 4:116

2. Killing A Human Being
   

   But whoever kills a believer intentionally – his recompense is Hell, wherein he will abide eternally. – Quran 4:93

3. Sorcery
   

   It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, “We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].” ….And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. – Quran 2:102

4. Not Performing the Prayer
   

   Then, there has succeeded them a posterity who have given up As-Salat (the prayers) [i.e. made their Salat (prayers) to be lost, either by not offering them or by not offering them perfectly or by not offering them in their proper fixed times, etc.] and have followed lusts. So they will be thrown in Hell. – Quran 19:59

5. Not Paying Zakat
   

   And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. – Quran 3:180

6. Breaking One’s Fast During Ramadan Without an Excuse
   

   O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous – [Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] – then an equal number of days [are to be made up]. – Quran 2:183-184

7. Not Performing the Hajj When Able to
   

   And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka’bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one’s conveyance, provision and residence); and whoever disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a disbeliever of Allah], then Allah stands not in need of any of the ‘Alamin (mankind and jinn). – Quran 3:97

8. Showing Disrespect to One’s Parents
   

   And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], “uff,” and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. – Quran 17:23

9. Severing the Ties of One’s Relatives
   

   Would you then, if you were given the authority, do mischief in the land, and sever your ties of kinship? Such are they whom Allah has cursed, so that He has made them deaf and blinded their sight. – Quran 47:22-239.

10. Adultery
    

    And come not near to the unlawful sexual intercourse. Verily, it is a Fahishah [i.e. anything that transgresses its limits (a great sin)], and an evil way (that leads one to Hell unless Allah forgives him). – Quran 17:32

11. Sodomy
    

    Do you approach males among the worlds. And leave those whom Allah has created for you to be your wives? But you are a people transgressing. – Quran 26:165-166

12. Accepting Usurious Gain
    

    Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, “Trade is [just] like interest.” But Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with Allah . But whoever returns to [dealing in interest or usury] – those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein. – Quran 2:275

13. Wrong Consuming an Orphan’s Property
    

    Verily, those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans, they eat up only a fire into their bellies, and they will be burnt in the blazing Fire! – Quran 4:10

14. Lying About the Prophet
    

    And on the Day of Resurrection you will see those who lied about Allah [with] their faces blackened. Is there not in Hell a residence for the arrogant? – Quran 39:60

15. Fleeing From the Battlefield
    

    O you who have believed, when you meet those who disbelieve advancing [for battle], do not turn to them your backs [in flight]. And whoever turns his back to them on such a day, unless swerving [as a strategy] for war or joining [another] company, has certainly returned with anger [upon him] from Allah, and his refuge is Hell – and wretched is the destination. – Quran 8:15-16

16. The Leader Who Misleads His Followers, the Tyrant and the Oppressor
    

    And indeed whosoever takes revenge after he has suffered wrong, for such there is no way (of blame) against them. The way (of blame) is only against those who oppress men and wrongly rebel in the earth, for such there will be a painful torment. – Quran 42:41-42

17. Arrogance, Pride, Conceit, Vanity and Haughtiness
    

    And turn not your face away from men with pride, nor walk in insolence through the earth. Verily, Allah likes not each arrogant boaster. And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; Verily, the harshest of all voices is the voice of donkeys. – Quran 31:18-19

18. Bearing False Witness
    

    And he who repents and does righteousness does indeed turn to Allah with [accepted] repentance. And [they are] those who do not testify to falsehood, and when they pass near ill speech, they pass by with dignity. – Quran 25:71-72

19. Drinking Alcohol
    

    O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah ], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist? – Quran 5:90-91

20. Gambling (Qimar)
    

    O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah ], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist? – Quran 5:90-91

21. Accusing a Woman of Adultery
    

    And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses – lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient, Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. – Quran 24:4-5

22. Misappropriating Spoils of War, Muslim Funds or Zakat
    

    It is not [attributable] to any prophet that he would act unfaithfully [in regard to war booty]. And whoever betrays, [taking unlawfully], will come with what he took on the Day of Resurrection. Then will every soul be [fully] compensated for what it earned, and they will not be wronged. – Quran 3:161

23. Theft
    

    [As for] the thief, the male and the female, amputate their hands in recompense for what they committed as a deterrent [punishment] from Allah . And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. But whoever repents after his wrongdoing and reforms, indeed, Allah will turn to him in forgiveness. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. – Quran 5:38-39

24. Highwaymen Who Menace the Road
    

    Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment, Except for those who return [repenting] before you apprehend them. And know that Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. – Quran 5:33-34

25. The Engulfing Oath
    

    Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price will have no share in the Hereafter, and Allah will not speak to them or look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them; and they will have a painful punishment. – Quran 3:77

26. Taking People’s Property Through Falsehood
    

    And never think that Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them for a Day when eyes will stare [in horror]. Racing ahead, their heads raised up, their glance does not come back to them, and their hearts are void. – Quran 14:42-43

27. Collecting Taxes
    

    The way (of blame) is only against those who oppress men and wrongly rebel in the earth, for such there will be a painful torment. – Quran 42:42

28. The Consumption of Haram
    

    And eat up not one another’s property unjustly (in any illegal way e.g. stealing, robbing, deceiving, etc.), nor give bribery to the rulers (judges before presenting your cases) that you may knowingly eat up a part of the property of others sinfully. – Quran 2:188

29. Suicide
    

    O you who have believed, do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly but only [in lawful] business by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful. And whoever does that in aggression and injustice – then We will drive him into a Fire. And that, for Allah, is [always] easy. – Quran 4:29-30

30. Telling Lies
    

    Indeed, Allah does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar. – Quran 40:28

31. The Dishonest Judge
    

    And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed – then it is those who are the disbelievers. – Quran 5:44

32. Bribery
    

    And eat up not one another’s property unjustly (in any illegal way e.g. stealing, robbing, deceiving, etc.), nor give bribery to the rulers (judges before presenting your cases) that you may knowingly eat up a part of the property of others sinfully. – Quran 2:188

33. Women Imitating Men and Vice Versa
    

    Narrated Ibn Abbas:
    Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) cursed those men who are in the similitude (assume the manners) of women and those women who are in the similitude (assume the manners) of men. – Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol. 7, Book 72, Hadith 773.

    Narrated Ibn Abbas:
    The Prophet (pbuh) cursed women who imitate men and men who imitate women. – Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 33, Hadith 4086, Grade: Sahih.

34. The Pimp and the One Who Permits His Wife To Fornicate
    

    The fornicator does not marry except a [female] fornicator or polytheist, and none marries her except a fornicator or a polytheist, and that has been made unlawful to the believers. – Quran 24:3

35. Marrying Solely to Return to the Previous Husband
    

    Ibn Mas’ud (ra) said that
    “The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) cursed the man who marries a women after her divorce solely to permit her first husband.” – Jami At-Tirmidhi

36. Not Freeing Oneself of All Traces of Urine
    

    And your clothing purify. – Quran 74:4

    Narrated Ibn Abbas,
    The Prophet (pbuh) once passed by two graves, and those two persons (in the graves) were being tortured. He said, “They are being tortured not for a great thing (to avoid). One of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine, while the other was going about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends). – Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol. 2, Book 23, Hadith 443.

37. Showing off in Good Work
    

    Indeed, the hypocrites [think to] deceive Allah, but He is deceiving them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not remembering Allah except a little. – Quran 4:142

38. Learning Sacred Knowledge for the Sake of this World or Concealing It
    

    Indeed, those who conceal what We sent down of clear proofs and guidance after We made it clear for the people in the Scripture – those are cursed by Allah and cursed by those who curse. – Quran 2:159

    The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) declared,
    “Will never smell the fragrance of Paradise, the one who seeks sacred knowledge for the sake of worldly gain.” – Sunan Abu Dawud

39. Breach of Faith
    

    O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence]. – Quran 8:27

40. Reminding Recipients of One’s Charity to Them
    

    O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders or injury as does one who spends his wealth [only] to be seen by the people. – Quran 2:264

    The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
    “Paradise is not the abode for the fraud, the niggard and the person who reminds the recipients of his charity.” – Jami At-Tirmidhi

41. Disbelieving in Destiny
    

    Indeed, all things We created with predestination. – Quran 54:49

    Narrated Ibn Umar (ra) that the Prophet said,
    “Everything runs in accordance with Allah’s Destiny even the inability and intelligence.” – Sahih Muslim

42. Listening to the People’s Private Conversations
    

    O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. – Quran 49:12

    The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) declared,
    “Whoever listens to people who are averse to his listening shall have molten lead poured into his ears on the Day of Judgment.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

43. The Talebearer Who Stirs Up Enmity Between People
    

    The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
    “He who stirs up enmity among people by quoting their words to each other will not enter paradise.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

    Once the Messengers of Allah (pbuh) passed by two graves and said,
    “The two are being tormented, and not for anything excessive: one of them did not free himself of traces of urine, while the other was a talebearer.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

44. Cursing Others
    

    The Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “Insulting a Muslim is an act of immorality and fighting him is an act of disbelief.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

    The Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “It is not the character of a believer to indulge in slandering, cursing, or immoral talk.” – Jami At-Tirmidhi

45. Breaking One’s Promise or Pledge
    

    And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned. – Quran 17:34

    O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts. – Quran 5:1

    The Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “There will be three people against whom I shall fight on the Day of Judgment: one, the person who makes a promise with an oath in my name and then breaks it, two, the person who sells a free man as a slave and appropriates his sale proceed and three, the person who employs, a workman and having taken full work from him fails to pay him his dues.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

46. Believing Fortunetellers and Astrologers
    

    And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart – about all those [one] will be questioned. – Quran 17:36

    The Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “Whoever goes to a psychic (Arraf) or a fortuneteller and believes what he says disbelieves in what has been revealed to Muhammad.” – Musnad Admed

    Aishah said that she heard the holy Prophet (pbuh) say,
    “The angels descend into the atmosphere with heavenly orders, talking about something that has been decreed in heaven, and Satan over-hears this and thereafter communicates it to the soothsayers, who add a hundred falsehoods with it themselves (to convey to their clients).” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

    The Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “Whoever goes to a psychic, asks him about something, and believes him, will not have his prayer accepted for forty days.” – Sahih Muslim

47. A Wife’s Rebellion Against Her Husband
    

    Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend (to support them) from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient (to Allah and to their husbands), and guard in the husband’s absence what Allah orders them to guard (e.g. their chastity, their husband’s property, etc.). – Quran 4:34

    The Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “When a man calls his wife to his bed and she does not come, if he spends the night angry with her, the angels curse her until morning.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

48. Picture-making
    

    Verily, those who annoy Allah and His Messenger (pbuh) Allah has cursed them in this world, and in the Hereafter, and has prepared for them a humiliating torment. – Quran 33:57

    Narrated Ibn ‘Umar (ra) that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
    “On the Day of Judgment, the picture-makers will be punished and will be told, “Bring to life what you have created.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

    The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
    “The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

49. Loudly Lamenting For the Dead or When Afflicted With an Adversity
    

    Umm Attiyyah (ra) said,
    “Among things upon which we gave the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) the oath of allegiance was to refrain from loud lamenting.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

    Abu Hurairah (ra) said, the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
    “Two qualities in people are unbelief attacking another’s ancestry, and wailing over the dead.” – Sahih Muslim

    On the authority of Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (ra) who said,
    “The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) has cursed the woman who loudly wails for the dead and whoever listens to her.” – Sunan Abu Dawud

    O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient. – Quran 2:153

    On the authority of Aishah (ra) who said, the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
    “Whatever the calamity a believer is afflicted with, he will be compensated for it, even the sting of the thorn.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

50. Excess Against Others
    

    The way (of blame) is only against those who oppress men and wrongly rebel in the earth, for such there will be a painful torment. And verily, whosoever shows patience and forgives that would truly be from the things recommended by Allah. – Quran 42:42-43

    The Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “Allah has inspired to me that you are all to be humble and that no one should exalt himself above another.” – Sahih Muslim

51. Overburdening and Arrogance Against Others
    

    Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful. – Quran 4:36

    Hakim fun Hizam (ra) said that, the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
    “Allah will torture those who torture people in this worldly life.” – Sahih Muslim

    The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
    “The slave should be fed and clothed and should not be burdened with something beyond his capacity.” – Sahih Muslim

52. Hurting One’s Neighbor
    

    The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
    “By Allah, he does not believe. By Allah, he does not believe. By Allah, he does not believe.” Someone asked, “Whom, O Messenger of Allah?” And he said, “He whose neighbor is not safe from his evil conduct.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

    The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
    “The one whose neighbor is not safe from his evil conduct will not enter Paradise.” – Sahih Muslim

53. Hurting or Reviling Muslims
    

    And those who harm believing men and believing women for [something] other than what they have earned have certainly born upon themselves a slander and manifest sin. – Quran 33:58

    The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
    “The Muslim is the brother of the Muslim. He does not oppress him, hang back from him, coming to his and or belittle him, it is sufficiently wicked for someone to demean his fellow Muslim.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

54. Harming the Servants of Allah
    

    And those who harm believing men and believing women for [something] other than what they have earned have certainly born upon themselves a slander and manifest sin. – Quran 33:58

55. Dragging the Hem of One’s Garment Out of Conceit
    

    And turn not your face away from men with pride, nor walk in insolence through the earth. Verily, Allah likes not each arrogant boaster. – Quran 31:18

    The Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “There are three people whom Allah will not speak to, look at, or exonerate on the day of judgment, and who will have a painful torment: he who wears the hem of his garment low (out of pride), he who reminds recipients of his charity to them, and he who sells merchandise swearing that he paid more for it than he actually did.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

56. Men Wearing Silk or Gold
    

    The Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “Wearing gold and silk has been made unlawful for the men of my community but permissible for its women.” – Jami At-Tirmidhi

57. Fleeing of the Slave
    

    The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
    “When the slave flee away (from his master), his/her prayer will not be accepted.” – Sahih Muslim

58. Slaughtering in Other Than Allah’s Name
    

    Eat not (O believers) of that (meat) on which Allah’s Name has not been pronounced (at the time of the slaughtering of the animal), for sure it is Fisq (a sin and disobedience of Allah). – Quran 6:121

    Amr Ibn Abi Amr (ra) told us on the authority of Aishah (ra) that,
    “Some people said, O Messenger of Allah, people bring us a meat but we do not know whether Allah’s name was mentioned over it or not? The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, “Mention Allah’s name over it and eat it.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

59. Falsely Claiming Someone is One’s Father
    

    On the authority of Sa’d, (ra) who said, the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
    “Paradise is forbidden to whoever falsely claims someone is his father, knowing he is not.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

    Abu Hurairah (ra) said, the Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “Do not wish for fathers other than your own. For someone to wish for a different father is unbelief.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

60. Arguing, Picking Apart Another’s Words, and Quarreling
    

    On the authority of Ibn Abbas (ra) who said, the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said,
    “It is enough sinful to be an arguing person.” – Jami At-Tirmidhi

    And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them. – Quran 29:46

61. Withholding Excess Water From Others
    

    The Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “Whoever denies others his surplus water, Allah will say to him, “Today I will deny you my bounty as you did with what you could not create.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

62. Stinting When Weighing or Measuring Out Goods and Similar Merchandise
    

    Woe to those who give less [than due], Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full. But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss. Do they not think that they will be resurrected for a tremendous Day – the Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds? – Quran 83:1-6

63. Feeling Secure From Allah’s Devising
    

    So when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We opened to them the doors of every [good] thing until, when they rejoiced in that which they were given, We seized them suddenly, and they were [then] in despair. – Quran 6:44

64. Despairing of the Mercy of Allah and Losing of Hope
    

    Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” – Quran 39:53

65. Forgoing the Congregational Prayer to Pray Alone Without A Legal Excuse
    

    Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (ra) related that the Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “I have considered having a man lead people at prayer and going myself to those who stay back from attending the congregational prayer to burn their houses down upon them.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

66. Constantly Missing the Friday and Congregational Prayer Without A Valid Excuse
    

    Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (ra) related that the Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “If the people forgo the Friday Prayer, Allah will set a seal on their hearts for them to become heedless.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari

    Ibn Abbas related that the Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “Whoever heard the caller to Prayer and did not answer not because of an excuse.” Someone asked, “What kind of excuse is that, Messenger?” He said, “Fear or sickness, he will not have his Prayer accepted (i.e. the Prayer which he performed at home).” – Sunan Abu Dawud

    It was related that once, a blind man came to the Prophet (pbuh) and said,
    “O Messenger of Allah, I have nobody to lead me to the mosque.” Then he asked for a permission to pray at home. Thereby, the Prophet permitted him. But before leaving, the Prophet called him and said, “Do you hear the Call to Prayer?” He said, yes. The Prophet said, “Then you have to respond to it.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

67. Bringing Loss to the Bequest
    

    After payment of legacies he (or she) may have bequeathed or debts, so that no loss is caused (to anyone). – Quran 4:12

68. Deception and Evil Schemes
    

    And they swore by Allah their strongest oaths that if a warner came to them, they would be more guided than [any] one of the [previous] nations. But when a warner came to them, it did not increase them except in aversion. [Due to] arrogance in the land and plotting of evil; but the evil plot does not encompass except its own people. – Quran 35:42-43

69. Spying on the Muslims and Revealing Their Weaknesses
    

    Hatib Ibn Abi Balta’ah (who sent a secret letter telling of the Muslims military plans to his relatives in Mecca in hopes that they would not get hurt), Umar (ra) wanted to kill him for what he had done, but the Prophet (pbuh) forbade Umar to, as Hatib had fought at Badr. – Sahih Al-Bukhari

70. Disparaging the Companions of the Prophet
    

    The Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “Allah most high says: he who is hostile to a friend (Waliyy) of Mine, I declare war against him” – Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

    The Prophet (pbuh) said,
    “Do not revile my companions, for by Him in Whose Hand is my soul, were one of you to spend gold equal to mount Uhud, you would not attain the reward of the handful of one of them or even half of it.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

    Narrated AI-Irbad Ibn Sariyyah, the Prophet said,
    “You must follow my deeds (Sunnah) and that of the rightly guided caliphs. Hold it and stick fast to it. Avoid novelties (in religious matters), for every novelty is an innovation and every innovation is an error and every error is in hell.” – Sunan Abu Dawud

Major Sins in Islam should be avoided by both Muslims and Non-Muslims. If someone is not a Muslim that does not mean that they will be excluded from the punishments ascribed with each Sin in the Hereafter. Therefore, we should try our best to avoid committing these Major Sins in Islam and even if we commit them for whatever reason, we should ask for Allah’s forgiveness and try our best not to repeat them in the future.
